Using several examples from Tolstoy's War and Peace, the author gives the reader a whole new look and appreciation into the world of a translator. €I came running to Larissa”—Larissa Volokhonsky, Pevear's wife of thirty years and collaborator on twenty-one works of Russian-to-English translation—“and said, 'Can that be? There is no war in “Anna Karenina”, except in Anna's and Levin's souls. What War and Peace is, I suppose, it the biggest and baddest attempt at experimental/historical fiction ever attempted. I'm curious as to why the other bloggers you follow(ed) weren't pleased with the translation. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. From the Patriotic War against Napoléon to the era of nineteenth- century radicalism and reform, and then on to the October Revolution, the Communist terror, and the postwar period, the Pevear-Volokhonsky project now surveys a cultural expanse as broad as the Siberian frontier. Today I spent a good amount of time sitting outside reading the London Review of Books, and there was an excellent review of Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of War and Peace. Of course, for Russian lit I go straight for Pevear & Volokhonsky! Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, translated by R. I bought the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation for the Kindle because my ancient Penguin copy has a small font that's tiring on the eyes. With an occasional break, it took me five months to finish the 800 pages of “Anna Karenina”, I probably should have expected not to enjoy “Anna Karenina” very much, because when I read “War and Peace”, I enjoyed the war and was often bored by the peace.
